Project #3 Inspiration - Melanie Einzig

Einzig’s Words: “Photographing in public keeps me awake and aware when my nature is to space out and daydream. “People watching” has been a form of enjoyment and creative perception since my youth. I find human beings infinitely mysterious, surprising and humorous. The activity of photography on-the-go is a form of meditation in action with a mystical undertone. It is an art of wandering aimlessly, tuning in to intuitive clues to turn this way or that, stick around here, pack it up or push forward with the process. Usually right when I’m going to quit something opens up. Searching for pictures is sometimes part of the plan but most of the best photos seem to find me. Often they appear on my way to or from work or while running an errand. Drifting around cities and towns frees me from linear thinking, boxed in feelings and the neurotic preoccupations of contemporary living. My hope is that I am creating a document of interest, a poetic and/or historical record.”

I am inspired by Einzig’s photographic mentality. One of my very favorite past-times is to sit in a public place (airport, park bench, coffee shop, etc.) and “people watch”. I am attracted to the idea of translating this strange but addictive hobby into an art form. I posted 10 of Einzig’s images; these 10 are my favorite shots for a variety of reasons.

Photo 2 - This shot is the perfect example of being in the right place at the right time. This image works so well because of the obvious juxtaposition that exists between the ominous clouds and the cheery and careless people. The people in the shot seem to ignore the fact that there is a large rain-cloud looming overhead. They are acting as if the sun could not be shining brighter. Einzig’s ability to capture this unique moment in time showcases her street photography talent.

Photos 3 and 8 - These shots clearly portray the viewpoint of the “people watcher”. What attracts me to both of these photos are the expressions on the all the peoples’ faces. One fascinating part of people watching is the observation of human expression. I am intrigued by the human expression that can be seen by pure observation.

Photo 5 and 10 - I like these shots because of the children. It seems that both of these street shots are taken at the eye level of a child. This helps the viewer relate to the subject. In photo 5, the viewer feels what it is like to be a child in a crowd; Everyone is towering over you and life is disorienting. It is obvious that these photos were taken street style, without any planning or set-up.

Photo 6 - It is easy for me to imagine taking this photo. It seems that Einzig took this shot in passing. This was probably an easy shot for her to take because the subject is facing away from the camera, so Einzig was able to be inconspicuous. I really like this shot because, again, it is an example of being in the right place in the right time to capture something unique.

Photo 7 - This image sticks out to me because of the subject matter. I also am amazed at the luck that Einzig has experienced to capture such a distinctive shot. Not only is Einzig lucky when it comes to finding interesting subject matter, but she also has a great eye in terms of frame. She has chosen to frame this image well with a slight tilt.

Photo 9 - It is hard not to be repetitive when explaining why I chose certain shots when it comes to street photography. Again, I am attracted to the rarity of an encounter like this one; Two business men seemingly laying down and taking a break outside on the concrete. Einzig’s choice to keep the frame active is also very effective.
